French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to ban social media websites to control protests that have erupted across the country following the June 28 police killing of 17-year-old African Nahel Merzouk during a traffic stop in Paris.
President Emmanuel Macron is facing a backlash from his opponents after he hinted at banning social media networks in a bid to contain mass violent protests. Other opposition leaders from France's right and left also strongly criticized the proposal.
Russian and Chinese critics have also expressed surprise at France's decision that Europe criticizes others and that a European country itself is banning social media.
Iranian critics say that when Iran banned Facebook, YouTube and Instagram because of their role in terrorism in their country, the United States and Europe made a big fuss. Iranian officials also say that, at that time, Instagram allowed the protesters to upload videos of making petrol bombs etc. and demonstrators were playing with the lives of the people and the police by using social media.
And today Europe itself is showing its duplicitous role by banning social media on the unrest in its own country.
