Businesses Slashing Workers' Hours in Record Numbers
  • 10 months ago
The number of people working part-time but wanting full-time work increased by 452,000 in June, the largest jump over three years. The total number of people employed part-time for economic reasons beyond their control rose by 12 percent compared to the previous month, reaching 4.2 million. Slowing sales were cited as the primary reason for cutting workers' hours, affecting industries such as fast-food, grocery stores, and hair salons. Economists warn that the most vulnerable workers, including those in low-wage jobs, Black and Latino workers, and immigrants, are often the first to be affected by reduced hours. Economists also suggest that this increase in involuntary part-time work and other signs of a slowdown in the job market may indicate future layoffs.
