Huge tranquilised bear falls from tree after terrorizing neighbourhood and stealing steak from BBQ

This is the moment a huge black bear fell out of a tree when it was tranquilised after terrorising a neighbourhood for hours and stealing steak from a BBQ.

Utility worker Chris Bertrand, 40, was at home when police warned him there was a large bear up his tree.

Police told Chris, and other neighbours, to stay inside, as the black bear had run amok through the streets for two hours.

It was first spotted a couple of blocks from Chris' home, and traveled across the garden, interrupted a cookout, and climbed the tree in his garden.

The bear was tranquilised by one of the officers and, after becoming woozy, fell from the tree like a rag-doll.

The bear was first spotted by one of Chris' neighbours at around 7pm on Sunday the 25th.

Chris, from Darlington, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, USA, said: "It disturbed a cookout a couple of blocks away.

"It even allegedly stole a steak off the grill. It ran off into a yard and then climbed the tree into mine.

"It's the first bear anyone in the neighbourhood has seen. It's a big deal. It was in the tree.

"The police had their rifles ready and they tranquilised it. I could see it get sleepy about 20 minutes later, at one point it was hanging on by its front claws."

The bear was such a rarity, police and animal control services shut down the entire neighbourhood.

Chris estimates seeing six to twelve police cars, an animal control van, two to four Department of Environmental Management officers and two vets.

He added: "I think they handled it well. I have a nine year-old daughter, so I think they did the right thing.

"Bears are something I think about now, even when it's just about me. I get home really late sometimes, and its dark. There are more sightings every day."
