"mind-boggling," says the Indian-born Prof. Sawhney, who teaches AI business applications at Northwestern University in the US. Citing the need for guardrails and ethical guidelines to manage its dangers and harness its potential, he compares the advent of AI to splitting the atom, with its enormous benefits coupled with the risk of “blowing ourselves up spectacularly.”
He explains to Howie how he sees AI affecting journalism, the call center industry, and Filipino nurses in online support roles. As a teacher, he expects students to “cheat” using AI, so he has adapted his methodology to incorporate AI inputs into his exams. He also shares lessons from the pandemic – “a period of tremendous forced innovation.”
