China’s massive and mysterious geo-engineering project going on in the South China Sea is highly contested by its neighbours. Beijing has been going to great lengths to assert its territorial claims by building brand new artificial islands in an area loaded with oil and gas reserves, rich fishing grounds and more importantly, crucial international shipping lanes.
