Residents are having to evacuate due to the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Plant Dam, further up the Dnipro River, on Tuesday. Those rescued included an elderly woman and her cat - who was in a bedraggled state when placed on board a rescue boat. Police officials said: “Our police officers are making extraordinary efforts to save people and animals in the flooded area. Because every life is important to us. We thank our brave police officers for rescuing and helping people and animals.” Ukraine’s leadership have blamed Russia, who occupy the area of the Kherson region where the dam is situated, for its destruction - which has caused an ecological and humanitarian disaster due to the flooding.
