00:00 Hi everyone, thanks for tuning in.
00:04 I'm Maureen Sheen, Senior Editor of American Salon, and I am here today with Encotron and
00:09 Minion Kin.
00:10 I'm so excited that they're here.
00:11 Hi guys, how are you guys doing?
00:12 So, tell us a little bit about what you're going to be doing today.
00:19 Well, we prepped our lovely model with the Hair Trend Foliage, which features amazing
00:26 autumnal colors for balayage.
00:29 What will you be doing today?
00:33 I gave her a light dusting, just because I really love the color and she didn't need
00:38 much, so I just did a light dusting to her.
00:41 But I'm going to style her with some combination of the New Wave and the Lived-in Wave, so
00:46 using some new products that L'Oreal has.
00:47 Perfect.
00:48 Sounds good.
00:49 I can't wait to see all this go down.
00:50 I'm going to jump behind the camera really quick, but if you guys have any questions,

04:48 I'm just going to go in.
04:49 I'm just going to go in.
04:50 I'm just going to go in.
04:51 I'm just going to go in.
04:52 I'm just going to go in.
04:54 I'm just going to go in.
04:55 I'm just going to go in.

04:57 I'm just going to go in.
04:58 I'm just going to go in.
04:59 I'm just going to go in.
05:00 I'm just going to go in.
05:01 I'm just going to go in.
05:02 I'm just going to go in.
05:03 I'm just going to go in.
05:04 I'm just going to go in.
05:05 I'm just going to go in.
05:06 I'm just going to go in.
05:07 I'm just going to go in.
05:08 I'm just going to go in.
05:09 I'm just going to go in.
05:10 I'm just going to go in.
05:11 I'm just going to go in.
05:12 I'm just going to go in.
05:13 I'm just going to go in.
05:14 I'm just going to go in.
05:15 I'm just going to go in.
05:17 It gives you a really good bounce to it.
05:21 I have a question for you.
05:25 Yeah.
05:26 What was the game about the 10 in 1 that you really like?
05:29 It's called the 10 in 1.
05:31 And I mainly use it on...
05:35 Maybe you can bring it closer to the camera.
05:37 Oh, to the...
05:38 Yes, to that thing.
05:43 Okay.
05:44 I like that one a lot because it's light.
05:48 I just don't like heavy products.
05:50 And you said it's a great detangler.
05:56 It's a great detangler for all types of hair.
05:59 Fine, thick.
06:01 If it's thick, I layer on a little more.
06:03 But if it's fine, I don't use a lot.
06:06 Do you use it on a lot of your clients before you cut?
06:09 Yes, I do.
06:10 Perfect.
06:11 I do.
06:12 Alright, there you have it.
06:13 So I'm going to go ahead and section this off.
06:16 So the waves I'll be doing is like a combination of like...
06:20 The new waves I've been doing with flipping it back and forth.
06:24 And the other one more like a spiral.
06:26 So what it does, it gives your hair a little more body.
06:29 A lot more movement to it.
06:30 So it's not just one direction.
06:32 It's up and side to side.
06:35 So it gives a lot of body and texture.
06:40 So the first part, I'm going to be using a Marcel.
06:43 For those of you who haven't used a Marcel before,
06:48 I would say put WD-40 into it.
06:52 So it gives you a lot more, you know, freedom to move it.
06:59 Because if not, it gets really stiff and your hands will hurt.
07:02 So the first part I'm going to do is that I'm going to go in.
07:07 Take this horizontally and then wrap the hair underneath it.
07:12 Make sure the temperature is not super high.
07:15 I would probably keep it about like 400 or so.
07:18 And then flip it.
07:20 Tap it a little bit.
07:35 So that's what ends up happening to that.
07:39 Okay.
07:40 So that's one part.
07:42 And now I'm going to switch it to the live in waves.
07:44 So that's going to be more of a spiral.
07:46 And the direction of the wave really, really helps.
07:51 Because you want to make sure that you alternate the waves.
07:55 So it's not all going the same direction.
07:57 So this one's going to go this way.
07:59 And the next one is going to go backwards.
08:01 But the other, the new wave will all stay the same.
08:03 So it's a combination of all of them, which is really, really cool towards the end.
08:08 And I like to do it myself because all of it you can do in one piece.
08:12 Instead of like switching out with the flat iron and doing with the curling iron.
08:16 It's just one tool.
08:18 That's a great tip.
08:21 Right? Yeah.
08:22 Because a lot of times you can take, you can do it with the flat iron.
08:25 And then also then you have to switch it with the curling iron.
08:28 And this way it's just like one piece.
08:32 It's so efficient.
08:33 And so very patient.
08:35 I like to work efficiently.
08:38 So this one is going to go forward.
08:41 Okay. So this is the live-in waves.
08:44 And I leave the ends out.
08:46 And then this is going to be the new wave.
08:50 So again, this is going to be a little more tricky.
08:52 So notice when I do hold this hair, I push it up.
08:57 And I'm not clamping this down.
08:59 So when you don't clamp this down, you don't get that crease.
09:02 But the second part I do clamp it down.
09:05 It's just the first initial part.
09:10 And then you go in.
09:11 It's a really fun technique to do.
09:17 Once you get the hang of it.
09:20 It creates a really soft, almost like finger wave.
09:26 Neat.
09:27 I have a question for you.
09:31 So do you change the size of the iron depending on the length of the hair?
09:35 Absolutely.
09:36 So her hair is about, I would say mid-length.
09:41 Then I use an inch and a half.
09:44 But let's say her hair is about like collarbone.
09:46 I would do an inch and a quarter.
09:48 I wish they make two inches.
09:52 But they only make two inches in spring.
09:55 Is that what you would use on her mid-length?
09:57 Yes.
09:58 Well, I actually use this, but I would space it out more.
10:00 So a lot of times when I do this, and I just like one after another,
10:04 I would space out half an inch, half an inch, half an inch.
10:06 So the bend gets a little bigger.
10:08 That's another great tip, guys.
10:10 Take this down, take notes.
10:13 Or just hit rewind and then play.
10:16 Yes.
10:17 So Min, quick question.
10:19 What is the color formula?
10:20 The color formula for the base was 7.40 Enoa with 20 volume.
10:25 And that is the Ammonia Free color from L'Oreal Professionnel.
10:29 The highlights were done with Multi-Techniques powder in 30 volume.
10:35 And that was all with Smart Bond to protect the hair.
10:37 And after we were all done, I used the Step 2 of Smart Bond, which smells amazing.
10:43 And of course, I did gloss her with the 7.40.
10:47 So the balayage trend is not only highlighting the balayage highlighting method,
10:52 but also the beautiful, rich, warm colors that we see this time of year.
10:57 So go outside, look at the trees, go for a walk, see what's happening in nature,
11:03 because that's where you're going to find your inspiration.
11:05 Not in good Southern Cal.
11:08 Just kidding.
11:09 What do you have there?
11:11 I live in Southern Cal.
11:12 Are there trees in the canyon?
11:13 No, there are.
11:14 Just kidding.
11:15 When I used sea foliage, like fall foliage, I was like, "Wow, it's so beautiful."
11:20 And I was in DC two weeks ago, and I saw the really orange, yellow.
11:27 It's so inspiring. It's so beautiful.
11:29 Anyways, we've got palm trees, so there we go.
11:33 Last but not least, this very part right here, I always end up with the lid in.
11:42 Why do you like the lids in there?
11:45 For this look, I like the lid in there because it's a combination of the old and the new.
11:50 So I just want to keep it continuously with that.
11:54 And also, it frames the face, so it goes away from the face.
11:58 I mean, you can change it up, but if you do change it up,
12:03 then you have to change up the first initial part.
12:05 Would you recommend using a shaper spray to help keep the shape?
12:09 Yes.
12:10 Sure.
12:11 I usually do that at the end.
12:15 Because a lot of times, honestly, unless I'm doing a wedding,
12:20 or I'm getting someone ready for a carpet,
12:23 then I don't really like to use hairspray on top of this,
12:26 just because it really dries out the hair.
12:29 But if this is a salon situation, I just use a mousse or something that's light.
12:38 Do you feel like the mousse almost reactivates with the heat?
12:43 It does.
12:44 So you don't need the spray?
12:45 It does.
12:46 Because I can see the shine, and the way it's illuminating the hair color is amazing.
12:51 She's so smart.
12:53 I'm so smart.
13:01 You make me smarter.
13:03 God, I'm stuck.
13:05 So remember guys, we used the Vitamino color, which is the Fresh Feel.
13:10 It's a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.
13:13 Fresh Feel.
13:14 Fresh Feel.
13:15 Say that five times.
13:16 Fresh Feel, Fresh Feel, Fresh Feel, Fresh Feel.
13:18 But this is really great to use on redheads,
13:21 because as you know, no matter what type of amazing color you do,
13:25 reds tend to fade the fastest.
13:27 So we really want to preserve this beautiful color that we did,
13:31 and it really does help with the hair.
13:33 So this is the beautiful color that we did,
13:35 and again it was Inola 20 Volume 7.40 on the base.
13:39 I highlighted with a Multi-Techniques Powder 30 Volume with Smart Bond by L'Oreal Professionnel,
13:45 and then we glossed everything with a 7.40 Deal Light with 6 Volume,
13:50 and that was just for shine, to give it a little bit more of a dash.
13:54 Damn.
13:55 Yes.
13:56 Wow.
13:57 Redheads have to dash.
13:59 So why is red harder to keep?
14:02 It's just one of those colors that don't stay.
14:06 The darker the color is, the better they last, but the reds fade the fastest.
14:11 So even when we were rinsing, I shocked Shannon with a bit of a cool rinse,
14:16 because the water was just a little red looking.
14:19 She's wide awake.
14:20 And yeah, she was like, "Oh my god, it's freezing!"
14:22 But it's one of those things that works.
14:24 Of course, we sealed it in with the Smart Bond, which helps to lock everything in,
14:29 and then the Soft Cleaner was amazing as well.
14:32 Yeah, and also the iron, don't make it too hot.
14:36 If you want to keep, especially with all the other crazy colors and stuff like that,
14:41 just make sure your iron is not on 450.
14:46 So you don't like to smell burnt hair when you're working?
14:49 Not this time.
14:50 Just kidding.
14:52 Not on hers.
14:54 Shannon's seems nice.
14:56 Well, and did you know she's getting married soon?
14:58 Oh, shoot.
14:59 That's good.
15:00 Wow.
15:01 Congrats.
15:02 Thank you.
15:04 Bridal hair, everyone likes it long, right?
15:07 Yes.
15:08 I see add extensions if you need it.
15:10 Just makes it easier.
15:11 Oh, I love her extensions.
15:13 They're beautiful.
15:14 Oh, thank you.
15:15 Yes.
15:16 Yeah, check them out.
15:17 They're called Lived In Hair Extensions.
15:19 And you can follow this.
15:21 You can just Google it, "Lived In Hair Extensions," or go to the salon,
15:25 Rimmer's Trans Salon, and we have it there.
15:29 Gorgeous.
15:31 So I'm doing the same.
15:34 Again, I alternate the waves back and forth, back and forth.
15:44 So you are a cutting and styling specialist.
15:49 Yes, I am.
15:50 And I am a color specialist.
15:52 So how do you like to consult with your colorists before you do your cut and your style?
15:58 Well, it depends if I cut before or not.
16:03 So a lot of times we decide or we decide with our clients what they want to do.
16:12 I usually either cut before.
16:14 Most of the time I do cut before just because a lot of times when they do come in,
16:18 they don't have the shape that I really want in it.
16:21 And I want to make sure that I don't cut off a lot of color at the end.
16:26 And it's just a lot of hard work that the colorist puts in, and I want to cut it off.
16:32 So usually I cut them first, and then maybe just a rough cut,
16:37 at least the layers be the right length and everything in the right shape.
16:43 And then they can go in, and then afterwards I can dust it.
16:46 So do the detailing.
16:48 Yes.
16:50 I like that too.
16:52 Generally it's like with balayage, if someone's having a major change,
16:55 you definitely want to go and put that shape in first so that you know exactly where you're designing that color.
17:01 Because the wonderful thing about balayage, balayage in general,
17:04 is that it's really customized to work with the cut and the style and the shape.
17:09 So whether you're contouring for someone's face shape or working with their future needs,
17:14 maybe it's a wedding, it's a really wonderful way to make sure that they're getting everything out of the experience
17:19 that you talked about in that consultation.
17:22 Very true. Very true.
17:24 Yeah.
17:25 I appreciate color so much because, I don't know, I really, color I think is hard.
17:32 There's so many different shades of reds, and different shades of blonde, brunette, you know.
17:37 Highly, I respect colors tremendously.
17:41 But one thing for sure is like when we do do consultation,
17:45 especially when you do the haircut first, you almost like do a layout for them, you know,
17:51 and vice versa that, you know, it's a collaboration of like color and cut.
17:56 So it's like I'm going to put this layer here and then, you know, she can enhance it or I can enhance the color later,
18:03 especially when I see it when it's drying, you know.
18:07 So it's really good.
18:09 Like I love working this way.
18:11 I can't imagine doing both.
18:13 That would be a stress case.
18:15 [Laughter]
18:17 You know, but this is second nature, you know, cutting and stuff like that.
18:22 And I love that.
18:24 I don't know.
18:25 She just knows where to put the color, so it's great.
18:28 It makes it easier.
18:30 So back here, I'm just alternating the curls again too, as you can tell.
18:36 But consultation is so important, especially with color and cut.
18:41 Those things have to be a full-on marriage.
18:44 See it?
18:45 And once you break it up, it's going to blend in really nicely.
18:47 So I don't do anything until afterwards and everything is done.
18:51 So I'm working horizontally up to the top of the head.
18:58 And as you can see, every single part, like the color is on point.
19:02 It's so cool.
19:05 Thanks, Don.
19:06 You're welcome.
19:08 Well, and knowing that we were going to be doing a styling technique that
19:13 showcased the new wave and the lived-in wave, I really wanted to make sure
19:17 that when I painted in the balayage pieces that certain pieces would pop more
19:22 and other pieces would be softer.
19:24 And that also picks up on the balayage trend with the different shades of red.
19:28 So it's really wonderful, again, to be able to consult, even if it was over
19:32 phone and by text message, so that we were able to come together and really
19:37 create the final look before we got here.
19:40 Yeah, we worked together in Paris before, and that's how we met.
19:44 And it was just easy.
19:46 I think, you know, when you find someone that you work with, everything should be
19:51 an easy flow, you know?
19:53 It shouldn't be so hard because, you know, it's not rocket science.
19:57 It's just a matter of, like, having a good understanding and collaboration
20:02 and also respect for what each other do.
20:09 I love you, Han.
20:12 No, it's true, though.
20:13 I'm not just, like, bluffing it, but I'm just, like--I think in the industry,
20:17 it's like we should collaborate more, and there's a lot of hair out there that
20:22 has so much--it's fun, you know?
20:26 It's not so closed.
20:28 It's not like a box that you have to sit in all the time.
20:31 It's good to, like, do other things and meet other people.
20:35 It's really fun.
20:36 You know, life is really short, so you know.
20:39 And show us some love if you agree with what Han is saying.
20:43 Like, give us those hearts if we do not work in the best industry ever where we
20:48 get to make people look and feel good on a daily basis.
20:52 It's amazing.
20:54 It is. It is.
20:55 And it's amazing to make people feel happy.
20:59 And sometimes it's just that cure that they need, and it makes them feel good
21:06 inside.
21:07 So sometimes working from the outside to the inside.
21:10 Ooh, I like that.
21:11 Right?
21:12 I mean, it's a start.
21:14 Maybe the inside needs a lot of work, but--
21:16 [laughter]
21:19 But it's a start, you know?
21:20 It's a good start.
21:22 Everyone needs a starting point.
21:23 Exactly.
21:24 Trust me, I have a lot of issues, too.
21:26 I think we all do.
21:27 [laughter]
21:29 Give us those hearts if you have issues.
21:31 [laughter]
21:34 So Han, for those audience members who are just tuning in right now,
21:37 can you speak a little bit about what curling iron you're using again?
21:40 Oh, so I'm using--
21:42 [audio cuts out]
21:44 So they open the widest, because I want to make sure that I fill in the hair
21:49 that goes in all the way.
21:50 Because some of them just open to here, and you really have to trickly--
21:54 like, when it's open here, I'll show you.
21:57 This is the difference.
21:58 So let's say if it opens just like that, you know, just like that.
22:04 That means I have to scoop the hair in.
22:06 When it's open wide, I can just go in and just lay it in.
22:11 It looks like a big open mouth.
22:13 Yes.
22:14 It's easier.
22:16 So I like this a lot, and make sure that you put some WD-40 in here
22:22 and in here with a joint set, so when it does rotate, it rotates a lot easier
22:27 so it's not horrible on your wrists.
22:31 I've been doing hair for 16 years, and very, very important to keep these wrists straight.
22:38 The moment you do this, a lot of stuff, that's when you mess it up.
22:41 And after you get surgery, it's not the same.
22:43 And this is what we prep her hair with.
22:46 With dry hair.
22:47 On dry.
22:48 Yes.
22:49 And Han was not afraid to use a lot of hair.
22:51 I did.
22:52 And you just got in there.
22:53 I sure did.
22:54 Got in there.
22:55 I like it a lot.
22:57 And what temperature setting are you using the iron at?
23:00 Well, she's setting at 4--let me see 4.
23:05 I'm going very fast, so if you're not that fast with this, then I would do 3, you know.
23:13 So if you're in beauty school, 300 degrees.
23:16 Yeah, and a doll head.
23:18 Yeah.
23:19 They don't talk back to you, and they're not mean.
23:22 You burn the hair, and they won't care.
23:24 Well, and that's a great tip.
23:26 If you're practicing, use a mannequin head.
23:28 You know what I'm saying?
23:29 I have so many mannequin heads.
23:31 I just recently moved, and then my friends were helping me, and they're like, "Dude,
23:36 you have so many doll heads."
23:37 I'm like, "I don't know.
23:38 It's a little creepy, huh?"
23:40 They're like, "Yeah?"
23:41 I'm like, "'Cause."
23:42 It's important, because a lot of times when you practice things, I don't--you know,
23:47 my mom doesn't have time to sit in and stuff like that, so I just stuck a head in and just
23:50 practiced.
23:51 And sometimes I really enjoy it, and I love that.
23:54 I miss that.
23:55 You know, doing hair is like--yes, making money is so important, and don't get me wrong,
24:00 I love it, but a sense of creativity can buy you a lifetime of doing hair.
24:08 You know, it doesn't matter.
24:09 If you do it for passion, it'll last a lot longer.
24:12 It's longevity.
24:14 Well, and especially with color, too, it's the same thing.
24:17 You can find inspiration everywhere around you on a daily basis, so it's really important
24:22 that if you're trying something new, practice on a mannequin or a family member before you
24:27 do that on your clients, right?
24:29 'Cause the goal with clients is to get them to come back and keep them happy and to make
24:33 sure that you're developing those relationships, so practice, practice, practice.
24:37 Great, great tip.
24:40 I would never stop learning.
24:42 Even if I were doing hair for 30 years, I would never stop learning because it's fun.
24:47 And hair's ever-changing, our industry's ever-changing, you know?
24:50 And it--yes, the wheels are invented, but it's a combination of different kind of wheels.
24:56 I don't know, you know, it's just something different, you know?
24:59 It's a combination of this, a combination of that.
25:02 Like, the whole color hair all came back in the wind world, like the '90s.
25:06 I grew up in the '90s, and I remember that, but it's different now, you know?
25:11 It's different, you know?
25:12 Even with the reds, like, all these different reds that comes in and--I don't know, it's
25:16 really cool with the haircuts and stuff.
25:19 So, with this last part, so I have the live-in waves right here and then the new and then
25:23 live-in, so I'm gonna go split this in half.
25:26 But I also have to remember that she has a little cowlick right here, so I'm just gonna
25:29 split that on a diagonal so this covers that, okay?
25:35 And this is gonna be, let's see, new.
25:40 Okay?
25:42 So you can make that decision.
25:45 I mean, it's just no right or wrong decision once you get up to the top part.
25:51 And this is gonna be the live-in.
25:57 Even in the iron, you can see the doll in different colors.
25:59 It's really cool.
26:00 Love it.
26:01 - Balayage, baby, all in love.
26:05 - If I were to do color, I would do balayage 'cause it looks so much fun.
26:08 - Yes!
26:09 - Painting.
26:10 And I use paint.
26:11 I haven't lately, but I'm gonna start again.
26:14 - Hold on.
26:15 Do you know where you could go to sign up for classes if you wanted to take balayage classes?
26:19 - I'm going back to--
26:20 - Pinter.com/academy.
26:24 - Yes, you can.
26:25 You can.
26:26 I think I'm a little, what?
26:28 No, I like styling.
26:29 There's a lot more to learn from styling, so I just wanna keep on doing it.
26:33 But anyway, so this is done.
26:35 But thank you for the info.
26:37 - Anytime.
26:38 Anytime.
26:39 I'm here for you.
26:40 I got your back.
26:41 Got your back.
26:42 - So, our model's done, and we're gonna wrap this up.
26:48 - Do you wanna use your next favorite product?
26:51 - Yes, but I wanna use this one.
26:53 I wanna use this one afterwards when I'm done.
26:55 So I'm gonna go ahead and brush this out with a wide paddle brush.
27:01 I like wet brushes because it's very soft and it doesn't really run the hair too much.
27:10 So when you shake it out, you can see that all the waves and stuff blend together.
27:16 So it's not really consistent.
27:18 It's not so mechanical.
27:22 You know?
27:25 Actually, I'm not gonna brush it out.
27:27 I like this.
27:28 'Cause sometimes when it gets a little sticky, if I put too much products in, I can see strands.
27:33 I don't like that, so I usually brush it out.
27:35 But this is good.
27:36 Maybe brush it out here.
27:41 And I'm gonna go ahead and use some of the cream, the HoloWave cream.
27:47 And this is really, really good for finishing.
27:53 I know. The thing is, I love learning about these products.
27:58 And we always have questions like, "Okay, this is good for when you put it wet or moist or stuff like that."
28:03 I learn the rules and like to break it.
28:05 Just because it's fun to use it differently.
28:08 And everyone likes to know how to use it, too.
28:10 And it can be different, you know?
28:13 So how it dissolves into your hands is really great.
28:15 I use it all over my hands.
28:17 And then what this does, it helps you get some separation.
28:27 See it?
28:29 Right off the bat, you see the separation?
28:31 It's really cool.
28:32 It defines the waves more.
28:36 And it smells amazing.
28:39 It's important.
28:40 If it doesn't smell good, I don't want to put it in my head.
28:43 It's true.
28:44 It's true.
28:45 Last but not least, I'm going to create a little bit of volume.
28:48 Classic.
28:50 Favorite.
28:51 So it's the Live In Next Stay Air to get that live in effect.
28:57 Shake this up really well.
29:01 And this is mainly for the scalp area.
29:14 And then some on the ends.
29:15 Just a little bit.
29:18 Thanks, Min.
29:19 Boom.
29:20 Boom.
29:24 So there you have it, guys.
29:27 What do you guys think?
29:28 It's gorgeous.
29:29 Right?
29:30 We have foliage.
29:32 I like that word.
29:33 I'm going to keep on saying it.
29:34 Foliage.
29:35 [LAUGHTER]
29:36 Amazing.
29:37 She was so beautiful.
29:38 Oh, sorry.
