Concerns the pest could reach Sydney in the future

An outbreak of fire ants in southeast Queensland could cost the economy more than a billion dollars if more isn't done. That's the finding of the latest study into the spread and destruction of the invasive pest which is thriving in southeast Queensland. The study found the ants are six kilometres from the New South Wales border and could reach Sydney’s outskirts by 2035.
