DALLAS COWBOYS UPDATE: Head Coach Mike McCarthy Excited About His Wide Receiver Group
The Dallas Cowboys are doing optional workouts before mini camp starts next week. OTA’s have been going well and Mike McCarthy is excited to see what he has going in the wide receiver room.
“Clearly I think Brandin [Cooks] and Turp [KaVontae Turpin] if you watch the way these guys jump out of their shoes. CeeDee [Lamb] is having a great offseason. So, Michael Gallup can run with anybody. So, definitely. We’re a turf team. We play on astroturf. So, those are things I pay attention to. I coach a team on grass and a team on turf. So, I think it has to be a part of your outlook in personnel acquisition.”
Mike McCarthy on having a faster team than usual on paper than in previous years. McCarthy said that KaVontae Turpin is one of the faster ones on the team and that he will be a key piece to the puzzle in the offense this upcoming season.
With Turpin returning fully rested unlike last season. He came to Dallas during training camp last season right after the USFL season and went right into the NFL season. With him well rested it will be exciting to see how he does this season. Last year Turpin was on special teams and did kick/punt returns. This year, according to Mike McCarthy, he will be more involved with the offense.
We talked to WR1 CeeDee Lamb after OTA’s and he said the wide receiver room is fast and he likes what he sees.
“By us adding Brandon Cooks and Michael Gallup getting healthy, and having KaVontae Turpin. We are very fast, very young, and have fresh legs.” Lamb said.
Rookie wide receiver Jalen Tolbert has also been making strides since last season according to Head Coach Mike McCarthy.
“Two excellent examples, Jalen (tolbert) and Sam (Williams). You know, Sam really came on for us. The more opportunities he was given his rookie year, the more productive he was. You can see the comfort in what we’re asking him to do, really schematically move around is some of the things the defensive staff is doing. And Sam, I’ve been impressed with Sam so far for the first three installs. And Jalen has made some really nice plays particularly in the seven-on-seven and two-minute situation. So, I think both of those guys are definitely making that jump.” McCarthy said about rookies Sam Williams and Jalen Tolbert.
