Orbetello presents itself as an exceptional small town due to its geographical location. It lies on a narrow promontory in the middle of two lagoons. To the north is the Laguna di Ponente with the Tombolo della Giannella, and to the south of Orbetello is the Laguna di Levante, with the dreamlike sand dunes of the Tombolo della Feniglia, a kilometer-long protected natural beach. With its peculiar shape of a ship's hull, the lagoon city lies as if anchored in the standing waters here and is connected to Monte Argentario by the artificial dam built in 1841. The lively town has always been busy with the fish market, and the increasing demand for specialties from the lagoon fisheries has not changed that to this day. Its scenic charms of the sea and the protected natural oasis "Laguna di Orbetello" have given the place more and more importance in terms of tourism over the years.
