What next for Donald Trump after being found liable for the sexual battery of E Jean Carroll
  • 11 months ago
Donald Trump has been accused of sexual abuse by E Jean Carroll, a former advice columnist who recently won her case against him in court.

Despite Trump's claims of not knowing her, a jury in the civil case returned a verdict that he was liable for sexually abusing Ms Carroll in a department store in the mid-90s, but not raping her. The recent verdict in New York was made possible by a change in law that allowed E Jean Carroll to file a civil case almost 30 years after the incident with Donald Trump.

Critics believe Trump has been using this verdict to further his own agenda, with the former US president claiming that he is the victim of a witch hunt orchestrated by his detractors to prevent his return to the White House. With President Joe Biden's job approval rating hitting a career low in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, there is a sense that theatre might be an opportunity for Republicans. A majority of Americans, around 68%, believe that he is too old to serve another term as president, which puts him at a disadvantage in early preferences for the 2024 election against top Republicans. In contrast, only 44% of Americans view Biden's potential opponent, Donald Trump, as too old despite both candidates being in their 70s (Trump is 76 and Biden is 80). In addition to age, Trump is widely regarded as having the mental sharpness and physical health required to serve effectively as president, with many expressing doubts about Biden's capabilities in both areas.

Despite being found liable for sexually abusing Ms Carroll, Donald Trump is determined to continue his bid to be re-elected as president. Some believe he may even use the verdict to claim that he is the victim of a malicious smear campaign orchestrated by his detractors. His core supporters appear to believe this claim, and it remains to be seen how the verdict will ultimately affect his chances in the upcoming election. Nevertheless, Trump remains a formidable candidate who will continue to fight tooth and nail for the presidency.
