'Like being buried alive': US disinformation expert recalls barrage of online threats

  • last year
Soon after the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced last year that Nina Jankowicz would head a newly-formed Disinformation Governance Board, she faced an onslaught of online abuse, including death threats, that drove her to resign after merely 10 weeks on the job. Jankowicz says DHS disregarded her advice on how to respond to a torrent of disinformation about her mission, leaving her without public support in the face of attacks on social media and in conservative news outlets such as Fox News. "It was a little bit like being buried alive," Jankowicz tells AFP in an interview in Washington.
