Residents had a narrow escape when a 50ft eucalyptus tree crushed three cars in a quiet cul-de-sac.

Rescue crews dashed to the scene after people reported hearing a loud noise “like an earthquake”.

Firefighters discovered a large tree had toppled over and crushed several cars in Leckhampton Close in Warndon, Worcester.

The tree, which is around 70 years old, collapsed at around 4pm on Tuesday (18/4).

Neighbours said it sounded “like an earthquake”, adding it was miraculous that no one was hurt.

One woman said: "I was surprised that something like this has happened. The tree has been there since I moved in in 1967.

"It's a shame. It was a good, old tree."

The driver of one of the wrecked cars, said: "My car was parked where the trees were and I saw my car under the tree.

"It's scratched, dented, and damaged. I don't know if my car will be written off."

Resident Andy McMann, 30, said: “The area where the tree came down is usually busy with people parking their cars or coming back from school with their kids so it’s a miracle no one was hurt.

“My mum lives on the road and she said she was watching telly when it sounded like an earthquake.

“She looked out the window and the huge tree had blocked half street.”

Firefighters, alongside a tree surgeon, spent almost six hours clearing the road of debris and making sure the existing tree was safe.

A spokesperson for "Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called out at 4.17pm on Tuesday to make vehicles safe after an incident in Leckhampton Close, Worcester.

"One Worcester Fire Station crew attended the scene where a large, falling tree had landed upon vehicles in a car park with no people trapped.

"One van was primarily affected and a tree surgeon helped release it from under the tree with a Worcester relief crew stepping in as the work went into the evening.

"The incident was left with the highways agency and marked as pending closure for HWFRS at 9.58pm."
