Senegal's gold rush brings hope and despair

For the last 20 years, eastern Senegal has seen a veritable gold rush. In the Kédougou region, on the borders of Mali and Guinea, people are flocking from all over West Africa to try and make a fortune. To regulate the activity, in 2014 Senegal established a gigantic corridor where artisanal gold mining is allowed, but is is still risky.
