Trams to Newhaven: first tram travels length of the new route as testing begins
  • last year
The Trams to Newhaven Project passed a milestone moment last night after the first tram was rolled out on the new line as part of the testing and commissioning phase.

Departing from Picardy Place shortly after 8pm, a tram could be seen traveling down Leith Walk tram for the first time in 67 years.

Phase one, that continues until March 17, sees the tram operated at a ‘walking pace’ to test the integrity of the line, with phase two commencing next week to ensure new signals operate effectively and safely. In the coming weeks, test speeds will increase to 20mph, followed by performance and timetable tests and driver training ahead of carrying passengers in spring.
