Real Betis fans clash with police in ugly scenes during the final minutes of their Europa League defeat by Manchester United... with away fans appearing to try and climb into the home section

Real Betis fans fought with riot police at Old Trafford during the closing stages of their 4-1 defeat to Manchester United.

Trouble appeared to flare up in the away end shortly after Wout Weghorst effectively killed off the tie by scoring United's fourth goal of the game.

Several away supporters appeared to try and climb over the barrier separating both sets of fans into the home end in the South Stand.

Images show riot police were quick to respond with a line of them getting in between both sets of supporters and preventing any away fans from getting into the home section.

TalkSPORT reported that bottles and even a seat were thrown by Betis fans toward the United end.

The Athletic also reported that one fan took off their belt to try and whip United fans over the green netting in between them.

There were further reports of scuffles among police and Betis fans, though they were unable to climb into the home end and eventually the situation was calmed down.

It was a strong night for the Red Devils in their first outing since their humiliating 7-0 loss to Liverpool.

Goals from Marcus Rashford, Antony, Bruno Fernandes, and Weghorst helped United to a comfortable first-leg victory in the last-16.

Weghorst had celebrated wildly with emotion after scoring his first Old Trafford goal for United in front of the visiting fans, though he didn’t attempt to rile them up.

It will give United the chance to rest some of their players when they travel to Spain for the second leg of the tie. .......
