CAMERA METERING: Spot, Evaluative, Partial or Center-Weighted? Which one to use?

  • last year
Metering is how the camera reads subject brightness
Each of those metering modes does indeed use the center of the photo, but they use it in different ways.

Evaluative metering is by far the most commonly used matering mode, it reads most of the picture area.

Partial metering as the name suggests read only a portion of the picture area around 10% at the center of the image.

Spot metering uses only the center of the image, covering approximately 3.5% of the scene and ignoring everything else.

Center-weighted average metering evaluates the entire scene but gives extra priority to the center.
