Christian Atsu, a Ghana international forward who played for Premier League clubs Chelsea and Newcastle, has died in the earthquake in Turkey. His body was found under rubble on Saturday, almost two weeks after the earthquake that devastated Turkey and Syria.
Atsu had been missing since the magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit Turkey and Syria on February 6, killing at least 45,513 people. He had been scheduled to fly out of southern Turkey hours before the quake but opted to stay with his club Hatayspor after scoring the winning goal in a Feb. 5 league game against Kasimpaşa S.K..
Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo posted a photo of Atsu on his official Twitter account and wrote: “Ghana football has lost one of its finest personnel and ambassadors, one who will be difficult to replace”. Atsu won 65 caps for Ghana and helped them reach the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final, where they lost to Ivory Coast on penalties.
