Mahashivaratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. According to mythological beliefs, Shivling was originated on the day of Mahashivaratri and on this day Lord Vishnu and Brahma worshiped Shivling for the first time. Special worship of Lord Shiva, fasting and Jalabhishek are performed on Mahashivaratri. Along with worshiping throughout the day on Mahashivaratri, there is special importance of worshiping Bholebhandari at night. According to religious belief, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati got married on this day.
