Walmart to Close 3 Tech Hubs & Require Workers to Relocate
  • last year
Walmart ($WMT@US) plans to close three U.S. tech hubs and requires workers to relocate to keep their jobs. The retail giant is closing technology offices in Austin, TX; Carlsbad, CA; and Portland, OR. Walmart will compensate workers in those locations to transfer to other primary offices, such as San Bruno, CA, or the company’s headquarters in Bentonville, AK., while those who leave will be given severance pay. Walmart will also require global technology workers to be in their assigned office at least two days a week. Many workers in Walmart’s Bentonville corporate headquarters have been required to work in-person five days a week since 2022. Last year, Walmart’s Global Chief Technology Officer Suresh Kumar announced plans to open new tech hubs in Atlanta and Toronto. Before the closures, the company had 11 tech hubs in the U.S. and six abroad, according to its website.
