Britain’s Northern Superpower: Building a Greater Glasgow

The event explored Glasgow as Britain’s northern superpower and how we build a greater Glasgow.

About this event
Along with Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham, Glasgow is one of the “big four” UK cities outside London, capable of becoming a global hub for tomorrow’s growth sectors.

Joined by some of the UK’s leading economic thinkers, we will use this event to discuss the ingredients Glasgow needs to become a significant engine of growth for the Scottish and UK economies.

Panel includes:

Gordon Brown, Former Prime Minister
Lord Sainsbury, Founder of Centre for Cities
Tony Danker, Director General, CBI
Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader, Glasgow City Council
Glasgow today has an economy that is underperforming the European average for growth and productivity and has a smaller voice within both the British and Scottish growth debates than a city of its stature should. How do we turn this around?

We will also be joined by panellists:

Stuart Patrick CBE – Glasgow Chamber of Commerce
Gillian Docherty OBE – University of Strathclyde
Jim McColl OBE – Clyde Blowers Capital
Declan Doogan – Biohaven Pharmaceuticals
Dr Susie Mitchell – Glasgow City of Science and Innovation
Pete Finan – Epidarex Capital
Judith Cruikshank - Royal Bank of Scotland
Henry Stannard - Coalesce Capital Advisors
Glasgow needs a bold and ambitious plan to build its economy, ensuring increased prosperity is shared equitably across all communities in Glasgow, especially young people and those on the lowest incomes.
