52 priests, Qazis involved in child marriages arrested: Assam DGP

Stressing on the Assam government’s massive crackdown against child marriages, DGP GP Singh held a press conference on February 3.

While addressing the media persons, he informed that 52 priests and Qazis involved in child marriages have been arrested so far. He added that the 4074 cases across different districts of the state were recorded and 2044 people have been arrested.

“52 priests and Qazis involved in child marriages have been arrested so far. The maximum number of people have been arrested from Dhubri, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Vishwanath districts.”

“About 2 months ago, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had told police that he had got inputs that child marriage was rampant in the state and directed police to carry out a probe. During last two days, 4074 cases across different districts of the State. Till 3 pm today, 2044 people have been arrested,” he added.
