Andy Carroll's HORROR Tackle on Christian Eriksen Put the Midfielder out of Action for Three Months

Erik ten Hag condemned Andy Carroll on Tuesday for the tackle that has put Christian Eriksen out of action for up to three months, demanding more protection for his Manchester United stars.

Reading striker Carroll escaped punishment from referee Darren England for his lunge on Eriksen during Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Old Trafford, before being sent off for two fouls in five minutes on Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro.

Ten Hag believes all three of Carroll’s tackles were reckless and said they ‘don’t belong on a pitch’. The United manager also questioned why referee Robert Jones took no action against Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta when the striker caught Lisandro Martinez in the face with an elbow in their 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park a fortnight ago.

Martinez needed treatment for a cut above his right eye and has been playing with a bandaged head since, but Eriksen could be out until May with ligament damage in his left ankle.

‘I am disappointed about that,’ said Ten Hag. ‘Football has to set limits, restrictions, that you protect the players. What football wants is the best players to be available on the pitch.

‘This tackle, and the two tackles after, they don’t belong on a pitch because there is a high risk to injure your colleague so it’s worse. I was also wondering at Crystal Palace when there is an elbow on Martinez. No-one is interfering. I’m wondering about such things because there is a risk of injury for the player.’

Asked if former Newcastle favorite Carroll set out to injure his players, Ten Hag replied: ‘I make my view about it. It was clear what my thoughts were. It happens in top football. It shouldn’t have happened but it did, and you have to deal with it.’

With Donny van de Beek out for the rest of the season after knee surgery and Scott McTominay likely to miss two weeks with a muscle injury, Fred is the favorite to replace Eriksen for tonight’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest.

Jadon Sancho will return to the squad after more than three months out, along with Anthony Martial who has missed the last four games. United won last week’s first leg 3-0. Ten Hag said: ‘We have a perfect chance to go to Wembley and bring a trophy in. Therefore we have to focus.’
