SoS from Glasgow Play Resource Association as it faces closure after council funding pulled.

Who they are

Voluntary Organisation, Registered Charity, Company Limited by guarantee
Biggest Scrapstore in Scotland, supporting two others to set up and work with Scrapstores across the UK under the umbrella Reuseful UK
Running for 38 years promoting recycle, reuse, repurpose and upcycling before it was even thought of
Prior to Covid we saved approx. 15 tonnes Annually from landfill. As Covid eases we are able to begin accepting more donations and so continue to increase the tonnes saved from landfill
FACING CLOSURE
Need to find permanent premises as time is running out. We have until end of March 2023 otherwise we need to close and begin dissolving the charity
PREMISES – WHAT WE NEED
Approx. 9000 sq. ft., ground floor, street access
Wind and waterproof with heating
Secure yard to park our van
Central location to make it easier for our members to access our service
Within a community with good transport links
The premises do not need to be anything fancy we can clean, paint and even have some trades people who are happy to donate their time to help us make it our forever home
MEMBERS – over 200 members made up of
Hundreds of students throughout Scotland
Artists, professional and hobby crafters, community groups, uniformed organisations, churches, educational facilitators, care homes and individuals from across Scotland
VOLUNTEERS
Our volunteers come from all walks of life and each one brings their own knowledge and skills to GPA. Some have been out of work for many years to raise a family, care for a loved one or due to illness, suffer from mental ill health or have retired. Volunteering is their first step back into society, we try to make this as easy, welcoming and comfortable as possible for them. Helping to build their confidence and enabling them to move onto more challenging volunteering roles either within GPA or other organisations, move to further education or even employment with transferable skills learned within GPA

COMMUNITY
Community can access part of our service with our community room and also our free trolley outside – supporting the most vulnerable in our society with no questions asked. Particular emphasis on providing free reading books for children to encourage literacy and help break down the attainment gap brought on by poverty.
CRAFTS
Arts and craft sessions, play sessions using recycled materials
Our ‘craft in a bag’ is something that was developed during covid, allowing access to more individuals and families – approx. 200 to 250 bags supplied per month
Facilitating the conversation about recycling, repurpose, reuse
How individuals and communities can do their bit for the environment
