Im Paris des späten 15. Jahrhunderts verliebt sich der missgestaltete Glöckner Quasimodo in das schöne Zigeunermädchen Esmeralda. Aber auch der böse Priester Jehan wirft ein Auge auf sie und befiehlt Quasimodo, sie für ihn zu entführen. Quasimodo wird von der königlichen Wache erwischt und verhaftet, Esmeralda verliebt sich in ihren Retter Phoebus. Der eifersüchtige Jehan sticht Phoebus nieder und kann die Tat Esmeralda in die Schuhe schieben, die dafür zum Tode verurteilt wird. Vor ihrer Hinrichtung wird sie von Quasimodo befreit, der sie im Glockenturm der Kathedrale Notre Dame versteckt...
