In Bagdad lebt der Dieb Ahmed, der die schöne Prinzessin liebt. Doch bevor er sein Ziel erreichen kann, um ihre Hand anzuhalten, muß er es mit dem gemeinen mongolischen Fürsten aufnehmen und tausend Gefahren überstehen, vom Tal der Ungeheuer über das Mitternachtsmeer bis zur Höhle der verzauberten Bäume. Der Film ist eine Erzählung wie aus 1001 Nacht, eine Phantasie, ein Abenteuerfilm an den Grenzen des Kitsches und des Expressionismus. Der Film beeindruckt und begeistert noch heute durch seine Spezialeffekte und das großartige Dekor.
