Windows automatically occupy a drive letter for every hard disk partition, like C, D, E, etc.

However, if you need, you can change the drive letter using Command Prompt.

Please note you can copy the commands from this video description.

How to Change Drive Letter on Windows PCs?

Every Windows ships with an inbuilt Command Prompt, and you can use this method on all Windows versions, including Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, and Windows 11.

To change a drive letter using CMD or Command Prompt window, first, click on the Start button.

Then, type cmd or command prompt.

In the search results, right-click on Command Prompt, and select the Run as administrator option.

On the command prompt window, type diskpart and hit Enter key from the keyboard.

On the DISKPART prompt, type the list volume command to show all hard drives, including their volume numbers and letters.

To select any volume, type select volume 5 and press Enter key on the keyboard.

In my example, we are selecting Volume 5. If you want to change the volume letter of another partition, then change No 5 accordingly.

Now, to change the drive letter, type assign letter=M and press Enter key on the keyboard.

Please note, here we are assigning the letter M to volume 5; you can change the drive letter accordingly as per your choice.

That's it. Now, open File Explorer and you will notice that the drive letter has been changed.
