Spurs Booed Off as Conte’s Side Concede First Goal for Tenth Straight Game in Horror Show

Antonio Conte started the New Year amid the same old problems and a mood of protest simmering in the stands as Hugo Lloris suffered more torment at the hands of Argentinians.

Lloris was at fault as Spurs surrendered the initiative to Aston Villa, spilling a speculative effort from distance by Douglas Luiz, then beaten to the rebound by Ollie Watkins who set up Emi Buendia to score.

Conte's team had conceded first for the 10th game in a row and did not have what it took to fight back into this game.

Luiz added the second and Tottenham fans sang for chairman Daniel Levy to get out of the club.

There was a rare start up front for Bryan Gil and Cristian Romero made his first appearance since the World Cup, two weeks after the final. Romero returned in typical style, booked in the first half-hour for a rash tackle from behind.

All three of Tottenham's central defenders were on yellow cards by half-time.

Aston Villa's World Cup winner Emi Martinez was among the subs, with Robin Olsen selected in goal by Emery, who was back in North London where he learned to frustrate Spurs during his 18 months as Arsenal boss.

Emery won one and drew two of his North London derbies although his overall impact at the Emirates Stadium was negligible. Villa is more solid under him, however, and Tottenham found their ranks difficult to penetrate.

The closest they came in the first half was Harry Kane's header, headed off the line by Ashley Young. Clement Lenglet picked out Ivan Perisic, on the move from his berth on the left.

Perisic took it away from Olsen but his touch took him wide and he turned and clipped a pass toward the back post, where Kane climbed to win the header. It was on target, bouncing inside the post with the 'keeper out of his goal but Young was back to clear.

Son Heung-min took his frustrations out on his protective mask, discarding it angrily after losing the ball to Leon Bailey. Son has worn it since fracturing his cheekbone in four places near his eye socket in Marseille on November 1.

The home crowd groaned as their team reached the interval with the game goalless but things got worse when Villa punished Lloris for the mistake and Buendia celebrated his first goal since August.

Luiz added the second, a fine move started by Boubacar Kamara, outstanding in midfield, who won the ball from Kane. Luiz traded passes with John McGinn and beat Lloris as he collected the return.

Villa lost McGinn to a hamstring injury and Luiz was also hurt as he threatened a third, forcing a save from Lloris. These will concern Emery but Conte perhaps has more to worry about.

Spurs have won only twice in their last seven Premier League games and are getting worse as Arsenal strides on at the top.
