The fulfilment centre at Gateshead stretches more than 546,000 sq. ft, the size of six and a half football pitches, and has a whopping 11km of conveyors. The site – dubbed NCL1 after Newcastle Airport, employs more than 1,300 permanent employees and hundreds of seasonal workers. But they also have the help of robots who travel around the massive depot using artificial intelligence (AI). The bots move around the centre picking up mobile shelves with products and delivers them to staff to collects the items. AI tech is used to map out the most efficient route for the robots using 2D barcodes on the floor. Once the route is mapped out, the robot takes the inventory pod to employs for products to be stowed or picked.
