Mariah Carey loses 'Queen of Christmas' title after trademark dispute
  • last year
The US Patent and Trademark Office has denied Mariah Carey’s request to trademark ‘Queen of Christmas’, ‘QOC’ and ‘Princess of Christmas’. Carey was denied the trademark application as she failed to respond to singer Elizabeth Chan’s opposition to the application. Chan, who describes herself as “the world’s only full-time pop Christmas recording artist” filed the opposition “to protect and save Christmas”. I feel very strongly that no one person should hold onto anything around Christmas or monopolise it in the way that Mariah seeks to in perpetuity, Elizabeth Chan, said in Variety interview. Carey’s company Lotion LLC was attempting to use ‘Queen of Christmas' for a merchandise line. She first became linked to Christmas after the release of her 1994 song "All I Want for Christmas Is You", which quickly become a festive classic.
