Who Is Adam Warlock? | MCU Update

Guardians of the Galaxy fans have been treated to several updates this month about the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3 film, with the biggest announcement so far being Will Poulter’s casting as Adam Warlock.

The We’re the Millers and Detroit actor is set to play a pivotal role in the film, with Adam Warlock having already been set up as the one of the film’s villains. But who is Adam Warlock, and what does his presence mean for Guardians of the Galaxy 3?

Adam Warlocks comes from the weirder more cosmic end of the spectrum of Marvel Comics. He first appeared as a creature called Him, a being constructed by scientists to be the perfect human; however Him rebelled against his creators and decided to head out into space.

While wandering the cosmos Him meets the High Evolutionary and is given the name Warlock as well as an artifact we now know as the Soul Stone - one of the Infinity Stones. This early connection to one of Marvel’s most powerful objects has seen Adam Warlock tied into pretty much every story involving the Infinity Stones.

Adam has thwarted Thanos’ plans numerous times, as well as many other beings who would seek to use the Infinity Stones for evil.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe though, we don’t expect Adam Warlock will play the same role. With the Infinity Stones destroyed and the Infinity Saga storyline wrapped up, we instead believe Adam Warlock will be a villain rather than a hero in the upcoming flick.

That’s based on the character’s first and only MCU appearance so far during the end credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Having been humiliated by the Guardians multiple times throughout the film, High Priestess Ayesha (i ee sha) is seen planning her revenge alongside a birth pod containing what she believes is the next step of her race’s evolution. Inside is a being she calls Adam, [More powerful. More beautiful. More capable of destroying the Guardians of the Galaxy.]

There are lots of possibilities for what story could have played out for Adam Warlock since that scene but our prediction is that he was one of those turned to dust by Thanos.

With her last-ditch plan literally up in smoke Ayesha could have been killed by her own people leaving Adam completely alone when he returns. Confused and angry, we imagine that Adam Warlock would seek out the only villains he knows of, the Guardians of the Galaxy - perhaps believing they are responsible for his mother’s death.

If this is the case Adam Warlock’s time in the MCU may be cut short - as villains typically don’t live longer than one film in this franchise - however given that Adam Warlock has also been connected with characters like Kang the Conqueror and Thanos’s big brother Eros in the comics there’s plenty of evidence to suggest he’ll be sticking around after Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

We’ll just have to wait and see when the film comes out on May 5 in 2023.
