Taiwan’s Vice President William Lai became the highest-level government official to visit Japan in 50 years when he attended the funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He says he was there in a personal capacity, but his visit has raised hopes for closer relations between Tokyo and Taipei.
