Japan bid farewell to Shinzo Abe on September 27, 2022, at the country’s first state funeral for a former prime minister in 55 years. The ceremony sparked controversy for its high cost and for the ruling party’s links to the Unification Church.  More than 4,300 guests, including US Vice-President Kamala Harris and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attended the ceremony at the Nippon Budokan hall in Tokyo.
