The obvious influence on Split is Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs. It wouldn’t be the first time Demme influenced his filmography. Lambs cinematographer Tak Fujimoto previously worked on The Sixth Sense and Signs.
Shyamalan’s detours into side characters’ lives can be traced both to Demme’s older comedies (Something Wild) and his recent documentarian dramas (Rachel Getting Married).
