England Crush South Africa by Nine Wickets to Seal Third Test after Zak Crawley’s Brilliant Knock

ZAK CRAWLEY scored a brilliant no-out 69 and hit the winning runs as England crushed South Africa by nine wickets.

That wrapped up the victory within 30 minutes of the third day of play in the third Test at the Oval.

And that secured a 2-1 summer series victory over the Proteas.

England were left with just 33 of the 130 runs needed once Crawley and Alex Lees returned to the crease this morning after play was controversially stopped due to bad light last night.

But Lees, down on the third ball of the morning, failed to see a ten-wicket win as LBW fell at 39.

Kagiso Rabada apparently half appealed one that hit England's first goal in the thigh.

And replays showed three reds and Lees was back in the locker room.

He barely had time to remove his sanitary pads let alone shower when Ollie Pope joined Crawley in the middle.

And it was Crawley, desperately in need of runs in the final test of the summer, who delivered the final limit to go on a speedy 57-ball 69 and bring England to the line.

A poignant Test match, which began on Saturday after rain and the death of Queen Elizabeth II, will be remembered for a number of reasons, notably the chanting of God Save The King before the game began.

However, it will be something hitters will forget.

Totals of 118, 158 and 169 in the first three innings and a lone 50 showed that the Oval's pitch favored the bowlers.

Ollie Robinson and Stuart Broad took seven wickets each, while South African sprinters Rabada and Marco Jansen each managed five.

And it was England's attack slipping through the tourists that ensured they only needed 130 to finish the match and win the series.

They did so with just one dropped wicket and secured a strong finish to a successful home summer of Test cricket, with the trip to Pakistan to follow.
