After the retirement of Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justice UU Lalit has become the next CJI of India. He has the record of becoming the second CJI who was not a judge in the High Court before becoming a judge of the Supreme Court. Before him, in the year 1971, Justice SM Sikri was directly made the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. However, the journey of Justice UU Lalit to remain in the post of Chief Justice will not be long. He will retire on November 8, 2022, after taking over as CJI on August 27.
Justice Kamal Narayan Singh had the shortest tenure of 18 days as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from November 25 to December 13, 1991.
