Shanghai switched off decorative lights along its famed Bund riverfront for two days from Monday, in an attempt to save energy as a nation-wide heatwave has energy demand soaring. The heatwave also reduced stretches of the Yangtze River to unprecedented drought levels, which greatly reduced the power output of hydroelectric dams on the river.
