Tornado Damage in Fulton County, Georgia

ATLANTA — A tornado warning is currently in effect for Fulton and DeKalb counties until 11:15 a.m.

Severe Weather Team 2 is seeing a debris signature on radar, which means a tornado is likely on the inside the perimeter in metro Atlanta.

A tornado warning was issued for an area that includes downtown Atlanta and CNN Center on Monday morning as severe weather threatens more than 100 million people from the southern Plains through the Mid-Atlantic.

The tornado warning was valid until 10:45 a.m. ET, according to the National Weather Service in Atlanta. The storm was located southeast of Douglasville, moving east at 35 mph, and was set to impact downtown Atlanta over the next 20-30 minutes. Around 450,000 people are in the potential path of the storm, according to the NWS.

A tornado watch is in effect until 4 p.m. ET for parts of Georgia and Alabama, including Atlanta, Macon and Montgomery, as additional thunderstorms could produce a few tornadoes in this watch area through the afternoon. Hail up of to 1 inch and damaging winds up to 70 mph are also possible with some of these storms.

The greatest risk for severe weather through tonight will be from Oklahoma through Indiana, where there is a level 3 out of 5, enhanced risk, according to the Storm Prediction Center. This includes Louisville and Evansville in Indiana and Fort Smith, Fayetteville and Jonesboro in Arkansas.

This region has the best chance for seeing a tornado and damaging winds, but large hail is also a threat, especially in northern portions of Texas and eastern Oklahoma.

Showers and storms Monday morning will exit the Ohio River Valley by midday, while the southern Plains remain dry most of the day.

By late afternoon, quickly moving thunderstorms will begin to form and they will persist into the night. Some of these storms are forecast to be supercells, which spin and can produce tornadoes. This tornado threat will continue into Monday night.

As severe storms sweep northeast through Georgia, several Georgia counties are under a tornado watch until 4 p.m.

The storm system is bringing rain and wind, along with chances for hail and tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.

In Middle Georgia, Bibb, Baldwin, Crawford and Jones counties are under a tornado watch.
