No ‘automatic’ citizenship for children born overseas to Malaysian mums

The Court of Appeal, in a split decision, has ruled that children born overseas to Malaysian mothers can be denied citizenship by operation of the law, with the majority in the three-member bench saying the word “father” in the Federal Constitution means biological father and cannot be extended to include mother or parents.
