US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taipei on August 2, 2022, becoming the most senior American politician to visit the island since 1997. The stop in Taiwan had not been officially confirmed prior to her arrival. Pelosi is expected to meet President Tsai Ing-wen on August 3. Beijing officials have condemned the US for trying to “use Taiwan to contain China”. A day earlier, the White House said the potential visit was “consistent with long-standing US policy”.
