The runner from Nottingham was suddenly having to come to terms with his first major global medal. And it was gold. As the small British contingent in Eugene began to celebrate the country's first 1500m world title since Steve Cram in 1983, the giant screen at Hayward Field suddenly switched to the stadium announcer.

SENSATIONAL Jake Wightman won Great Britain's first gold medal at the World Championships in Athletics in Eugene, and his glorious run was commented on by his DAD.

The 28-year-old became the first UK 1500m world champion since Steve Cram 39 years ago with a stunning climb of the last 200m at Hayward Field.

His proud father Geoff is the voice of athletics at major events and would call the race inside the stadium for all 10,000 fans.

Wightman said: “When I'm retired, fat and enjoying life a little bit, I can look back and be very proud that I did everything I could to get to this point. Anything goes.

“The dream scenario has vanished. How often do you become world champion?

“He hasn't sunk into it. It will be days, maybe months, until you really feel like this is what happened.
