Emigration statues Derry quayside, Ireland
  • 2 years ago
'The Emigrants' statues by artist Eamon O'Doherty were created in 1990 and later moved from the city centre to the quayside in Derry where tens of thousands departed from in years past for America, Britain and further afield, many of them leaving poverty and deprivation and many of whom would never again see their home or their family, but who would send back whatever they could if they were able to secure work and lodgings in their new world. Each year in certain places in Inishowen in Donegal and elsewhere stones were brought to a cairn like mound at a particular place by relatives to remember those who had left. Such a cairn can be seen at Mamore Gap in the Urris HIlls.
