Was a 19th century Danish philosopher and theologian . Initially, Kierkegaard himself saw himself as someone who tended to be religious rather than philosophical and somewhat distanced himself from philosophy , but later he became known as the father of existentialism philosophy .
Kierkegaard bridged the gulf that existed between Hegelian philosophy and what later became existentialism. Therefore, Kierkegaard became a critic of Hegel in his time and characterized what he saw as the pseudo - formalism of the Danish Church . His philosophy was a reaction to Hegel 's dialectic.
