Leveraging newer technologies, surveillance system revamp core to malaria elimination now: Dr Soumya Swaminathan
The world Malaria day has put the focus back on a crucial health challenge that is still seeking a comprehensive and conclusive solution. The World Malaria Report 2021 of the World Health Organisation (WHO) sees India as the only high burden country to have been able to sustain a reduction in the malaria disease burden. Yet, it also notes that India accounted for about 82 per cent of all malaria deaths in the South East Asian region. The pandemic months have only added to the woes and now with new technologies and tools being discussed, what options and challenges does India face while on its goal to eradicate malaria by 2030, if not earlier. WHO’s chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan took time out from her busy schedule to speak to the Indian Express Group. She talks of the changing landscape and the ground covered thus far globally and in India and shares her perspective on the way ahead as many countries, including India, are busy unfolding their strategies aimed at malaria eradication.
