UN says Yemen's warring parties have agreed to a two-month truce

The UN says Yemen's warring parties have agreed to a two-month truce starting Saturday, ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The UN special envoy for Yemen says the truce can be extended with the consent of the parties. Hans Grundberg added, warring parties accepted to halt air, ground and maritime operations inside Yemen and across its borders. The UN-proposed ceasefire would also ease sea and air restrictions imposed on the areas controlled by the Ansarullah movement to help alleviate a dire humanitarian crisis. Yemen’s former government has vowed to facilitate releasing prisoners, opening Sana’a airport and allowing fuel vessels to dock in Hudaydah port. Saudi Arabia and Ansarullah have welcomed the truce. Riyadh and its allies launched a devastating war on Yemen in 2015, plunging it into what the UN describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
