Research Finds 170M+ U.S. Adults Exposed to Lead During Childhood

New research found that more than 170 million people who were adults in 2015 and born in the U.S. were exposed in childhood to levels of lead beyond 5 micrograms/deciliter, which is above the CDC’s current limit for harmful lead exposure.

Lead exposure impacts cognitive development and also increases the risk of developing hypertension and heart disease. This study only looked at exposure to leaded gasoline, which peaked in usage from the late 1960s to the early 1980s and was finally banned for new vehicles in 1996.
