How do mortars work

A mortar is basically just a very large tube, closed at the bottom and mounted on a base plate that allows some adjustment. Below the barrel is a fixed firing pin. If the mortar shell falls into the barrel and hits the pin, the propelling charge burns.
An explosion of propelling charge then produces gas which pushes the mortar shell (or bomb) out of the tube.
