E-scooter accidents in London increased by almost 2,800% in the first half of 2021 compared to the whole of 2018

Official figures released in January showed a nearly 2,800% increase in e-scooter accidents in London in the first half of 2021 compared to the whole of 2018.

There were 258 collisions in the capital in the first six months of last year, according to the Metropolitan Police.

Throughout 2018, there were only nine. The number rose to 38 the following year, and then to 266 in 2020.

Privately owned e-scooters are common on the streets and sidewalks of UK cities, although they can only be used legally on private land.

Some 3,637 scooters were confiscated by the Metropolitan Police between January and November 2021, and any owner wishing to retrieve them will have to pay £150 and a £10 a day storage fee.

In June last year, London launched an electric scooter rental scheme with dozens of UK cities as part of a government trial that began in July 2020.
