Putin Stands Pat Against Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin says it is 'necessary to take a long-overdue decision to recognize the independence and sovereignty" of 2 separatist regions and asks the Federation Council for support of this decision. Putin issued the statement as Russia destroyed two Ukrainian combat vehicles and discovered on the border area penetration of a sabotage reconnaissance group from Ukraine. The Russian leader ignored warnings by the West not to recognize the Ukrainian rebels.
