A long sword is called an Odachi(大太刀) or Nodacghi(野太刀). It was widely used during Nanbokuchō period (of Japan; 1336-1392);period of the Northern and Southern courts.
As is the case with many of the terms of the past, there is no strictdefinition or usage. It refers to a sword that is longer than the commonly used tachi.
Tenshinryu uses long swords(Odachi/Nodachi) as part of its training. Of course, in actual warfare, depending on the situation, a long sword may be used. Through practice, you will learn the advantages and disadvantages of a long sword. It also has the effect of developing technique and body. This means that you will have an advantage when using a regular sword.

Tenshin-ryū hyou-hō is a Japanese Traditional Martial Arts which was created by Master Tokizawa Yahei about 400 years ago.
Tenshinryu derived from the corps of shadow to protect the Tokugawa shogunate which is called “Shilin Dan (the population of samurai)”.
They served Munenori Yagyu. Munenori Yagyu has devised a lot of “Kata (techniques)”.
Tenshinryu originated from “Shinkage ryu ”. Yahei integrated the techniques of Shinkage ryu and techniques created by Munenori into Tenshinryu. Tenshinryu is handed down as a sword of samurai to serve to the castle which was called “Joshi no Ken”.
